Women & Gender Studies (WGST)

Explore today’s issues related to women and gender from a variety of interdisciplinary approaches by addressing the intersections of gender with race, ethnicity, class and sexuality in the modern world. 
 
The WGST certificate option is available for two-year (traditional) MSW students. Students are required to take four courses to qualify for the certificate. The required social work courses to be taken in the first year of the program include:

  • SOWO 61823 Diversity and Social Justice 
  • SOWO 61843 Human Behavior and the Social Environment 1 
  • SOWO 61803 Professional Foundation

Option of one of two graduate level courses in WGST:

  • WGST 50103 Feminist/Queer Inquiry
  • WGST 60003 Colloquium in Feminist Theory

The WGST certification course is available in both fall and spring semesters and can replace one of the second-year social work electives. For course requirements and information, please refer to the course catalog.

Comparative Race & Ethnic Studies

Critically examine race and ethnicity in this academic and community-oriented program values respect, inclusiveness, creative expression, dialogue, engagement, inquiry and academic excellence.

The Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies certificate option is available for two-year (traditional) MSW students. Students are required to take four courses to qualify for the certificate. The required social work courses to be taken in the first year of the program include:

  • SOWO 61823 Diversity and Social Justice
  • SOWO 61843 Human Behavior and the Social Environment 1
  • SOWO 61803 Professional Foundation
  • Graduate level course with a portfolio component in CRES:
    • CRES 60003 Graduate Introduction to Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies
    • CRES 70001 Portfolio

The CRES certification course is available in both fall and spring semesters and can substitute one of the second-year social work electives. For course requirements and information, please refer to the course catalog.
